Carte Privée
The Institution
Carte Privée is an interactive archive dedicated to preserving representative human contributions through play.
Established through a finite founding period, the Archive will form a complete founding collection intended to endure as a permanent cultural record.
Recognition precedes participation. Every contribution enters the Archive through independent consideration before any contributor is approached.
Purpose
Preserving Through Understanding
Representative contributions endure only when the knowledge required to understand them also endures.
The Archive preserves both.
Through play, knowledge becomes appreciation.
Appreciation becomes stewardship.
Membership exists to cultivate that understanding over time.
Recognition
Prior Consideration
The Archive does not begin with a contributor, brand, or object.
It begins by identifying an enduring human contribution.
Only after that contribution has received careful consideration does the Archive determine which representative object most clearly embodies it and whose work gives that object its historical significance.
Recognition precedes invitation.
Establishment
A Deliberate Beginning
The Archive is established gradually over five years.
Twenty permanent Archive positions form the founding collection.
Position No. 001 is occupied by the Reserve Marker, representing Preservation. Positions No. 002–020 are reserved for nineteen representative contributions established during the five-year founding period.
During each Establishment Season, representative contributions are introduced and recognised according to principles defined in the Charter.
The pace is intentional. It allows both the founding collection and its membership to develop through careful recognition rather than continual expansion.
Contemplation
The Completed Founding Collection
Following the five-year establishment period, the Archive enters a final year of contemplation.
No new representative contributions are established.
Members revisit the complete founding collection as a whole before the institution enters its Preservation Era.
Preservation
An Enduring Record
The founding collection is permanently preserved as a complete body of work.
Its records remain accessible to future generations.
The purpose is no longer establishment.
It becomes stewardship.
Governance
Constitutional Publications
The institution is guided by a body of foundational publications defining its principles, philosophy, and long-term stewardship.
Together, they define how representative contributions are recognised, represented, established, preserved, and experienced.
The institution’s relationships follow four principles:
Recognition precedes participation.
Participation cultivates understanding.
Understanding becomes appreciation.
Appreciation becomes stewardship.
These principles preserve the independence of the institution’s cultural judgment and guide decisions relating to recognition, membership, preservation, and institutional partnership.
Institutional Funding
Carte Privée is independently established and financed by its founder.
During the founding period, private investment allows every representative contribution to be recognised independently, before any opportunity for voluntary support is presented.
Contributors and admitted members may choose to support continued stewardship through voluntary commemorations within the Archive.
Every member encounters the founding collection according to the same constitutional principles, allowing understanding, appreciation, and stewardship to develop through thoughtful participation, independent of voluntary support.
